The major benefit of positive stimuli is that this method creates a harmonious relationship between children and parents. Children find parents who always reward them more approachable. The resulting warm learning atmosphere may be very effective in releasing children’s ability. The problem with this approach is that in their process of learning children experience more mistakes, disorders, and failures than successes. Without some form of punishment, children are not likely to learn to avoid errors and their learning may remain stagnant.

On the other hand, negative stimuli are effective in helping children to improve themselves. Parents must first set and insist on clear-cut expectations for them. When their children fall below ability, parents react by giving them some forms of reasonable punishment. The children would then work harder next time to avoiding getting the same undesirable treatment. However, my own experiences in learning tell me that rewards and punishments are indispensable parts of the stimuli to learning; the two approaches complement each other. Rewards given by my parents and teachers did boost my learning greatly, but I could never really progress were it not for those punishments I have received since my grade school years. Hence I favor an approach that combines both positive and negative stimuli.
